Jujutsu Kaisen is a manga written by Gege Akutami that is one of the most popular series currently in Shonen Jump. If HxH wasn't constantly on hiatus I mighy be tempted to say that instead.but it is, and as much as I enjoy it I don't know where it's all going, especially after the reveal of the Dark Continent.It should be obvious that Jujutsu Kaisen is heavily influenced by Hunter x Hunter, but it actually surpasses that iconic shonen series in one respect. I enjoy that I know everything is building towards SOMETHING.
I still say One Piece tho because the world and the story itself is too intriguing for me. Usually the case woth shonen but One Piece early on was pretty good with that then Oda decided he really liked fanservice. The writing/character design of the female cast has been mostly trash TBH. The more the series goes on the more bloated it tends to look and the more pacing gets fucked.Ī huge emphasis to focus on Luffy despite the series vast and interesting cast. How it's developed has made previous battles look inconsistent, especially Marineford.Īrcs tend to follow a predicable pattern (Strawhats enter island ruled by corrupt figure/pirate, split up and meet inhabitants and work to beat the bad guy, crazy messy big clash takes place, some countdown mechanic is used to drive the stakes up (bomb/poison gas/Big Mom hunger/etc) and the heroes avoid it at the nick time, Strawhats win and everybody parties!). Haki itself has been implemented pretty poorly. However, the imaginative powers I was talking about earlier tend to be more akin to throwing random shit at the wall instead of drilling down to make sense of the powers. OP has great world building, imaginative display of unique powers, and good plot structure that generally lead to satisfying payoffs in the conclusion of the arc. It's been a problem for the last few arcs and one of the reasons I feel Chimera Ant while good is incredibly overrated. However the series gets very dialogue heavy and at a certain point the exposition becomes a distraction. The nen system is FAAAARRRRRR better wrtitten than Devil Fruit powers and Haki. HxH gets credit for taking more risks in character and plot development. Weaknesses are treatment of many female characters, too much use of offscreen to resolve important events. So yeah, main strengths are characterisation, visual design, narrative continuity and foreshadowing, sense of adventure. Also, I have confidence, baring tragedy, that Oda will finish the series. Again, I don't think it should be downplayed just how incredible some of Oda's visual design is. One Piece may have more dips in many ways, but I find it just as creative, much better progress, more attractive and probably creative visual design, it has a very strong cross age demographic appeal, and an unparalleled sense of adventure. Weaknesses are release schedule, exposition and poor integration of info dumps, pacing sometimes. Yeah, I would say main strength is conceptual and atmosphere, while characterisaton is also pretty good. But yeah, in general he is super interesting conceptually, more so than in OP I would say. The Chimera one basically managed to redeam itself with the ending and Mureams fate. Also, there have been some pretty dragging arcs.
Fair play if that is related to health, and I don't begrudge him that. He also seems to have continually expanded the story while not giving any confidence that he can actually bring it together. However, the author also relies on a massive amount of exposition to communicate his elaborate ideas, which I think is a bit of a fail. There is also a sense of threat and foreboding that is very well constructed. I enjoy HXH, it is very creative and actually quite mature in a lot of areas.
